The 2023 Hariban Award marks its 10th edition, and is currently open for submissions of black and white photography works until June 15th. The winner will be invited to Kyoto for a two-week residency, collaborating with the artisan team at the collotype printing and publishing company Benrido to learn the collotype printing technique and create a limited edition personal portfolio. The winner's work will also be exhibited at the Kyotography exhibition the following year.
The Hariban Award is a photography prize organized by Benrido, a collotype atelier based in Kyoto with over 130 years of history. In recent years, they have begun collaborating with various photography masters and foundations to produce collotype works, including artists such as Fan Ho, Thomas Ruff, Saul Leiter, Masahisa Fukase, and Shoji Ueda.
